The <strong>Marais Girard stele<\/strong>, erected in the <strong>ruins of an old guardhouse built in 1756<\/strong>, pays homage to the customs officers who once watched over the Vend\u00e9e coastline, controlling the passage and taxation of salt, formerly known as <em>the Gabelle<\/em>. Restored in 1968, this stele symbolizes a time when the coast was closely watched.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not far away, the <strong>Marais Girard red stone<\/strong> also attracts attention. This is an imposing <strong>vein of red quartz<\/strong> nestling on the cliff, several metres high and stretching out to sea.
