Girard Marsh
nature, history and coastal charm in Vendée
In Brétignolles-sur-Mer, the Marais Girard is much more than just a natural area by the sea: it’s a place steeped in history, authenticity and iodized landscapes that appeal to lovers of nature, heritage and peaceful strolls. Between beach, ancient heritage and charming ecolodge, the Marais Girard offers a complete and unique experience of the Vendée coastline, to be discovered from our Brétignolles-sur-mer campsite.
A family beach
and a seascape
The Marais Girard beach is one of the first surprises for visitors. Located at the entrance to the seaside resort of Brétignolles-sur-Mer, this large sandy beach is particularly popular with families for its easy access, pleasant swimming areas and proximity to coastal paths. At low tide, its rockier contours attract keen anglers and those who like to explore the nooks and crannies of the coast.
The beach is also an ideal starting point for discovering the varied landscapes that characterize this stretch of coastline: dunes, rocks, wetlands and sea intertwine to create a rich and ever-changing natural panorama.

History and heritage
the customs stele and the red stone
Just a stone’s throw from the beach, the Marais Girard is also a place steeped in history. The Marais Girard stele, erected in the ruins of an old guardhouse built in 1756, pays homage to the customs officers who once watched over the Vendée coastline, controlling the passage and taxation of salt, formerly known as the Gabelle. Restored in 1968, this stele symbolizes a time when the coast was closely watched.
Not far away, the Marais Girard red stone also attracts attention. This is an imposing vein of red quartz nestling on the cliff, several metres high and stretching out to sea. This natural deposit lends a unique geological touch to the site, and is a remarkable point of interest for the curious and lovers of rock formations.
A place of welcome
and eco-tourism
The Marais Girard is more than just a beach and historical sights: it’s also home to La Ferme du Marais Girard, an oceanfront ecolodge rehabilitated from an old traditional farmhouse. Just 200 m from the sea, it offers eco-friendly accommodation, from wooden pontoon villas to comfortable studios and convivial communal areas.
Designed around the theme of responsible tourism, the ecolodge integrates elements of sustainable architecture, generous green spaces and services that invite travelers to live in harmony with nature. Relaxation activities, a natural swimming pool and social areas complete the experience for those wishing to extend their stay in this unique coastal setting.
