The Corniche of Vendée

A listed natural site

The Corniche Vendéenne stretches for several kilometers along a coastline of schist and granite cliffs, formed millions of years ago and shaped by marine erosion. This spectacular landscape has been classified as a remarkable natural site since 1926, making it an invaluable part of the region’s natural heritage.

The coastal path, formerly known as the chemin des douaniers, makes it easy to follow this spectacular seaside itinerary. All along the way, the sea crashes forcefully against the rocks, creating a lively spectacle of foam and sea noise.

Points of interest

must-haves

Along the way, a number of natural sites stand out:
Boisvinet beach: located on the outskirts of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, this is a great place to relax, admire the sea and watch the boats come and go.
Le Trou du Diable (Devil’s Hole): this spectacular cavity carved out of the cliff by the sea is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Corniche. At high tide, water rushes into this sea cave and gushes out with force, creating a geyser effect that impresses visitors.
Les Cinq Pineaux: a little further on, these isolated rocks facing the ocean are another striking and photogenic natural landmark.

Along the way, you can also admire the Villa Grosse Terre, a historic mansion surrounded by a botanical garden offering a splendid view of the ocean, and the Arrondeau belvedere, ideal for a contemplative pause and some great photos.

A hike

accessible to all

The Corniche Vendéenne is a walk accessible even to inexperienced hikers. Most of the route is on foot, on safe paths with easy access points from parking lots and nearby urban areas. It’s also possible to follow the route by bike, thanks to cycle paths and shared lanes along the coast.

Depending on the option you choose – a leisurely one-hour excursion or a more comprehensive two-hour hike – this walk takes you past breathtaking marine panoramas, to places where you can relax, take photographs or simply breathe deeply against the horizon.

A year-round experience

Whether you come in summer to enjoy the scent of the sea and the blazing sunsets, or in spring and autumn for cooler, more peaceful walks, the Corniche Vendéenne is a must-see on the Vendée coast. It’s an invitation to discovery, contemplation and reconnection with the wilds of the Atlantic.
